Welcome to The World According to Words, a program brought to you by China Radio International. I'm your host Liu Yan.
The word I'm going to introduce to you today is - quirkyalone. Upon hearing this word, most people go, "I know quirky. I know alone, but I don't really know quirkyalone. Maybe it means someone who is quirky AND alone?"
Well, not quite. To truly grasp the essence of this word, let's first enjoy a clip from the hugely popular TV show Sex and the City.
I'm sure all the single people can relate to the scene. In fact, this very episode is titled "They Shoot Single People, Don't They?" That pretty much sums up the plight of the single people everywhere.
Being in this group myself, I have long wondered, why does being single have to be a bad thing? Why can't single people embrace their single status and live a happy and fulfilled life? Or in the words of those ladies from Sex and the City, "Be single and fabulous?" If you also have these questions, then "quirkyalone" is the perfect word for you. Its definition goes like this:
Quirkyalone noun
A person who enjoys being single and so prefers to wait for the right person to come along rather than dating indiscriminately.
Also adjective: Of, relating to, or embodying quirkyalones.
