Titanic Exhibit Opens in NYC to Mark 100th Anniversary of Tragedy

A new exhibit opened Tuesday at New York City's South Street Seaport Museum commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Titanic tragedy and examining the cultural legacy it left to the world.

The exhibit "Titanic at 100: Myth and Memory" features historical objects and documents from Titanic and its passengers, and interactive displays and photographs.

It also includes Marconigrams -- the wireless messages revealing details of how events unfolded on the night of April 15, 1912 when the ship struck an iceberg.

Sarah Henry, the museum's curator,told the press that the telegrams are invaluable for historians. "You can really see it playing out, the confusion, the lack of information, the uncertainty, etc," she said.

The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage to New York from Southampton, England.
